Queensland Sport Awards 2022
Thank you to all those that attended and viewed the 2022 Sport Awards held at the Mercure at the beautiful Sunshine Coast on the 13th of August 2023.
We celebrate the achievement of our winners and nominees!
Chloe Clague – Adult Star of the Year
Chloe had a wonderful 2022 in bowling; The 2022 Australian Masters female champion has had a consistent year on the ranked event tour.
She finished 3rd overall in the 2022 Women’s Rankings and 1st in Queensland, and she competed in the 2022 IBF World cup representing the green and gold for the women’s division.
Jarrod Langford – Adult Star of the Year
Jarrod like Chloe has just been going strength to strength, he also represented Australia in the 2022 IBF World Cup, he finished 3rd overall in the national rankings and 1st in Queensland.
He also became the inaugural Tenpin Premier League Champion and bowled the first ever 300 game in TPL History. He won his third straight Melbourne Tenpin Cup becoming the third bowler in the events history to win Three or more Melbourne Tenpin Cup’s and the second to win three in a row. The only other person on that list is Jason Belmonte.
Emily Bottomley – Youth Athlete Star of the Year
Emily finished 2nd overall in the national youth ranking in 2022, she finished 3rd in the Sydney Youth Cup, 1st in the South Australian Youth Cup, 2nd in the TBA21 Masters and 3rd at the grand national youth cup.
Emily was a member of the Walter Rachuig all-star team, was selected as an athlete of the Inaugural Tenpin Premier League and she travelled to Sweden to represent Australia in the U21 World Championships.
Alongside her magnificent achievements in the sport in 2022 she has been very heavily involved in the junior program at Logan and has a passion for sharing her love for the sport with all of the juniors at Logan City Tenpin. Emily works incredibly hard behind the scenes to get junior events off the ground and is a valued volunteer of the Logan City Tenpin Junior Committee.
Jamie Robinson – Youth Athlete Star of the Year
In 2022 Jamie had an excellent year, he became a 3x Qld State Youth champion which has never been done before.
He represented Australia in Sweden and won a bronze medal. Jamie won the Sydney Youth Cup in 2022 and also won the TBAQ under 21 Youth competition for the second year in a row, he was also the team captain.
Tamika Pettigrew – Junior Athlete Star of the Year
Tamika had a fantastic 2022 finishing 3rd overall in the national junior rankings, she finished 1st in the Queensland Junior Cup, 1st in the SQ zones, she was a member of Australia Green and Gold to win the New Zealand national youth championships, Logan City Junior Masters winner, she finished 3rd in the grand national youth eliminator, and she was apart of the Gold Medal South Queensland President’s Shield team.
- Tamika finished 3rd in the SA Junior Cup
- She was a member of the all-star team in New Zealand
- Tamika was the TQI championships masters winner.
Jackson Buckingham – Finalist
Jackson had a wonderful year in 2022:
- Placed 8th in Logan City Tenpin Cup
- Played for the boys Queensland President’s Shield Team averaging 209.9.
- Played in the TBA21 cup finishing 2nd with a 230.1 average.
- Played for the Green and Gold Australia team with 3 events in New Zealand
- Jackson won gold and broke the U21 New Zealand Nationals doubles record with Jackson bowling a 733 series. Jackson would take home a silver medal in the U21 teams division and broke another team record which has been standing since 2007. He was also awarded a spot ion the all- star team.
- To finish the year Jackson was voted the 2022 Parent Player of the Year by the Logan City Tenpin parents.
Matthew Hurst – Athlete with a Disability Star of the Year
Matthew Hurst is a disability bowler who has been a part of the Queensland Open State Team many times. He has been consistently upskilling and keeps going from strength to strength. On a regular weekly basis along with his coach Beth Boyd. He is a great all round team player.
• Matt achieved a place in the Inclusion National Training Squad in 2022.
• Represented Australia at the IBF Para World Cup where he finished 2nd.
In the 2022 Queensland State Disability Championships at Coolangatta Tweed he finished.
• Open All Events: 1st.
• Open Singles: 1st.
• Open Doubles: 1st and 3rd.
• A Grade Doubles: 1st.
• 4 Man Teams Competition: 1st.
• 4 Man Teams Classic: 1st.
• Open Masters: 1st.
Tyler Allen – Finalist Athlete with a Disability Star of the Year
Tyler lives and breathes Tenpin Bowling. Whether it is on the lanes or at home on his PlayStation. After having a competition break after finishing juniors and moving to the Moreton Bay region, Tyler joined Caboolture Bowls Friday Special Olympics League. He then started training with Don Lindsay and found his competition desire again after seeing the National Disability Championships Live on the web. He gives his all, every single game and training session. He is ever so close to reaching his first 300 game and currently has a high 4 game series of 966 and 3 game series high of 707.
The Queensland State Disability Championships.
• Tyler finished 2nd in the open all events
• 2nd in the open singles
• 2nd in the open doubles
• 2nd in the classic teams divisions
Tyler was rewarded with a spot in the inaugural NTS Inclusion squad.
• He finished 2nd in the singles division of the National Games Special Olympics
• 4th in the doubles division.
Tyler was selected for the Australian Team at the IBF Para World Cup on the Sunshine Coast where he finished 3rd in the singles division and 3rd in the mixed doubles.
Ashley Poelstra – Finalist Athlete with a Disability Star of the Year
Ashley had a spectacular 2022
• Finishing 17th in the Q tour at Richlands with an average of 211.3.
• Finishing 9th at the Queensland Junior Cup Youth division with an average of 174.9.
Later in the year Ashley competed in the Nationals Disability where he bowled over 27 games and finished 4th in the all events division and 9th in the masters.
Ashley then finished his year bowling in the QLD State Disability where he finished 3rd in the Male All Events division and 5th in the Open Masters.
Ashley has volunteered for Logan City Tenpin, at times going to community events where he promotes Tenpin Bowling to the Disability public.
Anthony Hamilton – Senior Star of the Year
Anthony had an incredibly successful 2022, he finished 2nd in the National Ranking and 1st in Queensland, he was apart of the TBA50 squads that competed in Melbourne winning a gold medal in the men’s doubles division.
He also took home the gold for the Hammer Queensland Seniors Classic.
Graeme Morgan – Finalist Senior Star of the Year
Graeme had a spectacular 2022, he was in the Australian Team in the over 50 category bowling in Malaysia, in the singles division he finished 5th with an average of 216.7, He finished 12th in the doubles division with an average of 176.3, in teams he finished 8th with an average of 200.3 and in the master’s, he finished 2nd with an average of 213.13.
At Logan Graeme has a few fans and he speaks so well with the Juniors. He is always open to sharing some guidance.
TBA50 Squad – Adult Team of the Year
The Queensland TBA50 Squad who finished with a bronze medal in the national team’s event with the team members being: Anthony Hamilton, Brian Olsen, Karen Smith and Suz Wenzel.
In the males double event Anthony Hamilton and Brian Olsen took home the gold medal, a truly wonderful campaign that is truly deserving of being the Adult Team of the Year for 2022.
Qld Girls President’s Shield Team – Qld Junior Sports Team of the Year
Team Members: Jessica Canfield, Tahlia Corbett, Chloe Marks, Katy Melton, Tamika Pettigrew, Kayla Piffero.
Against a lot of odds, the girls team demonstrated resilience and maturity to put all issues aside and do what they do best: Bowl! They bowled like a team that have bowled together for years together, something that is incredibly impressive for a group of such young girls and were rewarded with the ultimate title: 2022 Girls Shield Winners.
Jesse Ellis – Coach of the Year
Jesse is an incredibly committed coach who is always at the bowl early to get the lanes ready for the juniors at 7:30am. Jesse started as a coach in bowl patrol and progressed through junior league coaching to now one on one and elite level coaching.
As a coach Jesse is extremely knowledgeable in the sport from the equipment to his knowledge of lane patterns and his ability to deliver a message in terms that make sense to a beginner and an elite bowler, he is an incredible asset to the Logan City Tenpin Coaching team.
In 2022, Jesse was the coach of the winning QLD Girls Presidents Shield Team. His commitment to this team extended well beyond the week of shield and saw him attend all Presidents Shield training weekends,
He is a valued member of the Logan City Junior Tenpin Committee; he is always a consistent presence for junior bowlers and his dedication to the sport deserves to be applauded.
Lyn Wakeham – Volunteer of the Year
Lyn has served as the Secretary for the Tenpin Bowling Association of Townsville for many years now and continues to serve as a committed volunteer.
Her proactiveness has only grown the strength of the Association as well as served participants with wonderful experiences. She is a friendly and welcoming presence and the work that she has volunteered to do in her long service deserves to be applauded.
Mt Warren Lanes – Bowling Centre of the Year
For a 12-lane centre they are always overachieving due to some incredibly dedicated staff who are always willing to put the time in to create a welcoming environment for their bowlers. Their membership consistently increases, which is due to the ongoing support from Rudy and Tracy. Their attitude towards their bowlers is always incredibly friendly, they treat everyone with respect and have plenty of interactions that just create a really friendly atmosphere for their bowlers each and every week.
No matter how busy they are, they are always willing to put the time in which just illustrates how much they truly care about the community they have built in Mt Warren from the ground up.
Logan City Centre Association – Association of the Year
Their support for junior programs in the community has always been invaluable. They have volunteers help with their junior championships; they have organised many fundraisers to create opportunities for their bowlers. They assisted Emily Bottomley to go to Sweden to represent Australia, and helped fundraise for Tamika Pettigrew, Jackson Buckingham, and Jessica Canfield to compete in New Zealand.
The Association is also a major supporter of the Roll n Strike program by going to local community events and taking the equipment to help promote the program to introduce new people to the sport.
Lyn Fletcher – Distinguished Services to Sport
Lyn is someone who has continued to provide support through her excellent photography skills, she is an ardent supporter of Tenpin Bowling. Lyn has won many accolades over the years including the Perpetual prize at the Queensland Junior Cup.
She is always giving person who is willing to put in the time, Lyn has provided hundreds of high quality action photos for our sport.
2022 Queensland Junior Cup – Event of the Year
The 2022 Queensland Junior Cup was enjoyed by all and captured an electricity and excitement that is hard to capture, it offered equal prize money for the boys and girls, it was well supported by the tenpin junior community and is run by a dedicated team, Robert McDonald, Jodi Bishop, Nathan Stein, Jo Pettigrew, and Tamika Pettigrew.
Bruce Morris- 2022 TBAQ Hall of Fame Inductee
Bruce began his journey in the sport as a junior competing at exhibition bowl before he was later hired as the centres backend mechanic.
It was in these very early stages of his life that Bruce decided he wanted to dedicate his career to growing the sport of Tenpin Bowling. He started as the manager of Logan City Lanes then became the manager of Browns Plains Tenpin and Surfers Paradise Tenpin. He also managed Go Bowling Ashmore.
He worked at TBAQ as the State Administrator for many years, he served as the Goldpin and ABPA President where he was a valued member. On a national scale he served as a Board Member for Tenpin Bowling Australia for 6 years.
Bruce has experience in Governance and organisational enhancement. His voice has grown to be well respected, and many listen to the advice he has to offer, from both a bowling and business perspective as well as a sport advocate. In his later years, he has been known to take new owners under his wing and help them get on their feet.
He is currently the owner of Logan City Tenpin and is very passionate about the future of Tenpin Bowling. His focus on fostering participation at the junior level, is the key to the success of Bowl Patrol and Junior Programs at Logan City Tenpin. He has invested so wholly in these programs that two of his own grand children have undertaken Bowl Patrol and are now some of our most exciting up and coming Juniors. He has ensured that the Morris name will continue in the sport of Tenpin Bowling for many years to come.
